Youth PROMISE Act
Youth Prison Reduction through Opportunities, Mentoring, Intervention, Support and Education Act
What is the Youth PROMISE Act?
The Youth PROMISE Act is a bipartisan bill aimed at reducing youth incarceration and ending the school to prison pipeline. The bill seeks to fund evidence based, community-determined programming to address the specific needs of the area. The bill would support efforts like restorative justice in schools, mentoring programs, after school programs, positive youth development, and other programs that are able to show evidence of their effectiveness. It also encourages communities to reinvest the savings from reduced youth incarceration back into positive community programming.

"We must act to stop the heartbreaking cycle of violence that traps so many of our young people. Studies show that early childhood programs, summer school programs, mentoring, after-school programs and job-training programs can lead to decreased youth arrests. The Youth PROMISE Act invests in programs like these that we know to be effective, as well as efforts to bring together community members and organizations concerned with the safety and welfare of children." - Senator Landrieu
