Over the summer recording artist Jack Johnson invited the Student Peace Alliance to table at concerts during his summer concert tour. Student Peace Alliance members organized to table at over 15 concerts across the country!
Jack Johnson toured the nation in Summer 2008 and invited the Student Peace Alliance to table at the concert's interactive "Village Green." This was an opportunity for concert attendees to "meet local and national non-profits and learn about making change within their three spheres of influence: their actions, their voice and their choices." The "Village Green" was a part of a larger campaign, All At Once, which is a community network that empowers fans to "take action toward a healthier community and planet." The concept All At Once is based on is that idea of individual action, multiplied by millions, creates global change. To learn more visit the official website: www.AllAtOnce.org.
Students spread the word with presentation materials and pamphlets, but concentrated on taking pictures of fans that support the establishment of a U.S. Department of Peace and Nonviolence to be used to create a mass-scale online petition. This petition will be an invaluable resource to show our support base and for use in future lobbying. Concert attendees responded to the picture petition with excitement, and SPA volunteers snapped well over a thousand photographs at the concerts! Look back soon for more information on the photo petition.
In addition, hundreds of individuals signed up to learn more about Student Peace Alliance and the campaign for a U.S. Department of Peace.
SPA organizers were thrilled with the results of their tabling:
""It went so well," said Ruthie Posluszny, a SPA Regional Organizer. "People were really excited to be a part of the photo petition. People were lining up and waiting to do our action. We got 130 pictures and in each picture there were an average of two or three people."
Sarah Rubinton, MA state organizer for the Student Peace Alliance, tabled with 10 other volunteers on August 6 at the Jack Johnson concert in Mansfield, MA. There, Jack Johnson visited Sarah and another before the event to thank them for their peace work.
Jack Johnson personally approached and thanked many of the Student Peace Alliance volunteers at various concert stops during the summer. He also took individual pictures with many of them!
Jack Johnson also agreed to match donations of up to $2,500, and with your help we reached our goal! Thanks to the support of our grassroots, we raised $2,500 and received a matching grant from Jack Johnson for the same amount, in addition to the funds he also donated to our campaign for our participation at his concerts. Thank you Jack Johnson for your vision and incredible generosity!
