The Schoolcraft Student Peace Alliance Chapter in Michigan is meeting short term goals and creating long term plans in order to establish peace in the community, and for the students, in themselves.
SPA Chapter at Temple start a new class. In a sociology special topics course, college and high school students will work side by side to understand and explain violence in urban areas... The pilot urban violence course is unlike others at Temple. It was created after a campaign by the Student Peace Alliance related to an independent study for SPA Vice President Max Cuddy, a senior sociology and African-American studies major.
We are excited to share with you that Costa Rica has recently passed through their legislative body a bill to establish a Ministry for Justice and Peace! This is encouraging news as momentum continues to grow around the world in favor of establishing structures at the highest levels of government that make peace a priority. We congratulate the hard work of the campaign in Costa Rica! And, our own efforts continue to have an impact.
After 3 years of organizing in campuses and communities across the country, we at Student Peace Alliance felt it was time to take it up a notch. We want to make tangible change NOW and set in place the foundations for long term sustainable peace.
The Student Peace Alliance has chosen the Youth PROMISE Act (H.R. 1064/S. 435) as our main advocacy priority for the year. We feel this bill represents the type of evidence-based legislation that will support and enhance the ability of communities to prevent violence and build structures of peace and conflict resolution.

The 2009 Department of Peace National Conference was a huge success! With over 400 attendees, several guest speakers, and visits to Representatives and Senators on Capitol Hill Monday, March 23, this event sparked hope for the future and a passion for peace for all involved.
