Make a PROMISE Campaign; we will lobby Representatives and Senators in support of the Youth PROMISE Act and write Letters to the Editor to make violence prevention and intervention a central part of public dialogue.

  • Lobby Congress: During this campaign we are targeting all Senators and those Representatives that are key to bringing the bill up for a vote in the House.  Sign up here to lobby in your area. Materials available in the Learn section.
  • Letters to the Editor: An important purpose of this campaign is to raise awareness about Youth PROMISE Act which will increase momentum on a grassroots level and make violence prevention and intervention a central part of the public dialogue.  These elements put vital pressure on our policy-makers to take action on Youth PROMISE Act.  Through our website you can write a Letter to the Editor and have it sent to your local newspaper.
Violence impacts all of our lives.  Newspapers run headlines that detail violent attacks, but rarely highlight the solutions that exist in our communities.  While the Department of Justice found that 60% of young people experienced violence within the last year, our policy-makers have yet to recognize that there are already evidence-based programs which with sufficient support will transform our communities.  We can not let another Congressional session pass without supporting violence prevention in a meaningful way.  Now is our time to ask policy-makers: Will you PROMISE to meaningfully lead in support of this historic legislation?

Already We Have Made an Impact

  • The Youth PROMISE Act (HR 1064) currently has 234 cosponsors in the House of Representatives and strong bipartisan support.
  • In the Senate (S 435) the Youth PROMISE Act currently has 12 cosponsors, also with bipartisan support.

We have already made a difference.  In Vermont, Harwood Union SPA sent 80 letters to Senator Bernie Sanders, after which he co-sponsored YPA and cited their efforts.  A Michigan Peace Alliance group organized phone calls to Senator Klobuchar.  She co-sponsored YPA.   In New Hampshire Peace Alliance organizers passed a resolution supporting Youth PROMISE Act through the state legislature. In Massachusetts Brandeis University SPA sent 300 valentines to Senator Brown and caught the Senator's interest.  The chapter is currently speaking with Senator Brown about signing on to the bill.

Will you be the next to make an impact?
